How to speed up a slow computer safely

    Most slow computers are not infected and do not need optimisation software. They need free space, fewer startup programs, fewer browser extensions and, sometimes, one inexpensive hardware change.

    Find out why it is slow before changing anything

    Open Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS and watch which resource is saturated while the machine feels slow. A pegged disk, exhausted memory and a busy CPU each point to entirely different fixes, and guessing wastes an afternoon.

    Note whether slowness is constant or tied to a specific application. A browser with forty tabs behaves nothing like a system that is slow from the moment it boots.

    • Disk at 100%: mechanical drive, failing drive or heavy indexing
    • Memory full: too many applications or insufficient RAM
    • CPU high at idle: background updater, sync client or malware
    • Slow only in the browser: extensions, tabs or a hijacker

    The changes that genuinely help

    Free disk space first. A drive above roughly ninety percent capacity degrades noticeably, and deleting large forgotten files or moving media to external storage often restores responsiveness on its own.

    Then reduce startup programs to the ones you really need, uninstall software you no longer use, remove browser extensions you cannot explain, and install pending operating-system and driver updates. On any computer still using a mechanical hard drive, replacing it with an SSD produces a larger improvement than every software change combined.

    What optimisation software is worth

    Registry cleaners have no measurable performance benefit on modern Windows and carry a real risk of removing something needed. 'Speed boosters' that report hundreds of problems on a healthy machine are selling alarm rather than performance.

    Some reputable clean-up utilities are genuinely useful for finding large files, duplicates and startup entries in one interface, and they are bundled with several security suites. Value them as convenience rather than as a source of speed no manual clean-up could achieve.

    Telling slow apart from infected

    Malware looks different from normal ageing. Look for processes consuming resources at idle, new browser extensions or a changed search engine, pop-ups outside the browser, and security software that will not update.

    If any of those are present, run a full scan with a reputable suite and follow a proper removal process, including changing account passwords afterwards. If none are present, treat the problem as maintenance and hardware rather than security.

    Browser performance specifically

    For most people the browser is the computer. Reduce open tabs, remove extensions you do not use weekly, clear cached data occasionally and enable memory-saving features where your browser offers them.

    A content blocker usually makes browsing measurably faster by removing tracking and advertising requests. Be selective about which one: blockers have broad access to everything you view, so use a well-known project with a long maintenance history.

    When to stop optimising

    A machine more than seven or eight years old with a mechanical drive and minimal memory has a ceiling that no software can lift. At that point the useful question is whether an SSD and memory upgrade costs enough less than replacement to be worth it.

    If the drive is showing errors, back up immediately and stop tuning. Deteriorating storage produces exactly the stalls people interpret as a software problem, and continuing to use it risks the data rather than only the patience.
