How we test and compare security software

    CiberProteção combines hands-on product testing, independent laboratory evidence and transparent commercial checks. Our aim is not to identify one universal winner, but to explain which products are dependable for different people, devices and budgets.

    What our scores mean

    Every score is an editorial judgement based on a consistent category framework. We assess the qualities that matter in normal use, then weight them according to the product type. Antivirus products are judged heavily on protection and performance; VPNs on privacy, security, speed and reliability; password managers on cryptographic design, account protection and usability.

    Scores are comparative rather than permanent. A product can move when its protection changes, an audit reveals new evidence, pricing becomes less competitive or a rival improves substantially.

    • 9.0–10: outstanding and suitable for a broad audience
    • 8.0–8.9: strong, with limitations worth understanding
    • 7.0–7.9: adequate for a narrower use case
    • Below 7.0: material shortcomings prevent a general recommendation

    Antivirus testing

    We install each suite on a clean, fully updated device and examine setup, default protections, scan controls, web filtering, ransomware safeguards, alerts and account management. We record the effect on common tasks and compare our observations with recent results from recognised independent laboratories such as AV-TEST, AV-Comparatives and SE Labs.

    No single laboratory result decides a ranking. Detection rates can vary between test sets, while usability problems such as false positives may be just as disruptive as a modest difference in headline protection.

    VPN testing

    VPN testing starts with ownership, jurisdiction, logging claims and published audits. We then test application behaviour, DNS and IPv6 leaks, kill-switch operation, supported protocols and connection stability. Speed measurements use multiple nearby and long-distance locations at different times; a single unusually fast result is never treated as representative.

    Streaming access is a secondary convenience, not proof of privacy. Platforms change their blocking systems frequently, so we describe observed reliability without promising permanent access to a particular catalogue.

    Password-manager testing

    For password managers, we review the published security architecture, zero-knowledge claims, account-recovery design, multifactor authentication and security history. Hands-on checks cover importing, generating, saving and filling credentials across desktop and mobile platforms.

    We also test sharing and emergency-access workflows because a secure feature can still fail users if permissions are confusing. Open-source code is a positive transparency signal, but it does not replace independent audits or careful defaults.

    Security products change continuously. We monitor major releases, ownership changes, security incidents, pricing and independent test results, and display an updated date when a page receives a meaningful review. Small typographical corrections do not imply a full retest.

    Our testing cannot reproduce every network, device or threat. Readers facing a suspected compromise should preserve evidence and seek qualified incident-response help rather than relying solely on a product comparison.

    Do companies pay for higher rankings?

    No. Affiliate relationships may fund the site, but ranking decisions remain editorial. Products with no commercial relationship can rank above partners.

    Do you buy every product?

    We use a mixture of purchased subscriptions, trial accounts and vendor-provided access. The source of access does not change the testing framework or give a vendor approval rights.

    How often are comparisons updated?

    Major pages are reviewed when products, prices or evidence change and through scheduled editorial checks. The page date reflects a substantive update, not an automatic timestamp.

    Can a high score guarantee security?

    No. Scores compare products under our methodology. Safe configuration, software updates, unique passwords, backups and user decisions remain essential.
