A VPN cannot make your connection faster than the route your provider already offers, and in most cases it adds a small amount of latency. What it can do is protect against denial-of-service attacks aimed at your home address, avoid bandwidth throttling on some networks, and give a stable, private connection on shared or hotel networks.
For competitive play, latency is the only figure that matters. Choose the nearest server to the game's data centre, use a lightweight protocol and accept that a few milliseconds of overhead is the cost of the protection.
